What is the difference between a cotton wick and a wood wick, and why would I choose one over the other?+
The difference comes down to burn experience. Cotton wicks are the classic choice: they produce a steady, even flame with a clean melt pool, burn quietly, and are easy to trim and maintain. They let the fragrance do all the talking, which makes them ideal if you want consistent scent throw with minimal fuss. Wood wicks, on the other hand, create a wider flame that burns a bit hotter and faster, melting wax across a broader surface. That larger melt pool often means stronger scent throw. The signature feature is the soft crackling sound as the wood burns. Many people find it cozy, like a tiny fireplace. So: choose a cotton wick if you want a quiet, traditional burn with easy care, or a wood wick if you love a bolder fragrance and that warm crackle. Both burn beautifully. It’s simply a matter of the atmosphere you want in your space. Care tip for both: Always trim before each burn, cotton to about ¼ inch, wood wicks to about ⅛ inch with any ash or char cleared off, to keep the flame steady and the scent clean.
How long will my 405 Craft candle burn?+
It depends on the size of the candle. As a general rule, our 10 oz candles provide many hours of burn time. To get the most hours from your candle, follow the burn guidelines on the care card: always let the wax melt edge to edge on the first burn, keep burns to around 2–4 hours at a time, and trim the wick to ¼ inch before each lighting.
What is coconut apricot wax, and why do you use it?+
Coconut apricot wax is a creamy, slow-burning blend of coconut wax and apricot kernel wax. We chose it because it burns cleaner and longer than traditional paraffin, holds fragrance beautifully for strong, even scent throw, and pours into a smooth, luxurious finish. It’s also renewable and plant-based, so it fits our commitment to a cleaner, more mindful burn.
Do you use essential oils or fragrance oils?+
We use high-quality fragrance oils in our 405 Craft products. This lets us create rich, layered scents, like Mountain Spirit’s frankincense, myrrh, and lavender, that essential oils alone can’t always achieve, while keeping every scent phthalate-conscious and safe for home use.
How do I get the most out of my candle?+
Three simple habits make all the difference. First, let the candle burn long enough on the first light for the wax to melt all the way to the edges of the jar: this “memory burn” prevents tunneling later. Second, trim the wick to about ¼ inch before every burn to keep the flame steady and smoke-free. Third, keep burns to 2–4 hours at a time and let the candle cool fully before relighting.
Why did my candle tunnel, and can I fix it?+
Tunneling happens when a candle isn’t burned long enough for the wax to melt edge to edge, usually from short first burns. The good news: you can often fix it. Let the candle burn for a longer session (2–4 hours) so the melt pool catches up, or carefully scoop out a thin ring of the extra wax around the tunnel. Going forward, always let the first burn reach the edges of the jar.
How do I use wax melts?+
Break off one or two cubes from the slab and place them in the top dish of your wax warmer: electric or tea-light warmers both work. The cubes melt to release fragrance without a flame. Each cube typically gives you hours of scent; swap in fresh cubes when the fragrance fades. Never add water to the dish, and never leave a burning tea-light warmer unattended.
What do I do with my candle jar when the wax is gone?+
Reuse it! Once the candle has about ½ inch of wax left, it’s time to retire it. To clean the jar, pour warm (not boiling) soapy water in to loosen the remaining wax, then wash and dry it. Our jars make beautiful catch-alls, bud vases, and organizers. Never burn a candle all the way down to the bottom. It can overheat the glass.
Are your candles safe around pets and kids?+
Our candles are made to be enjoyed, but like any open flame, they should be kept out of reach of children and pets and never left burning unattended. If anyone in your household is especially sensitive to fragrance, burn in a ventilated room and start with shorter sessions. When in doubt, check with your veterinarian about specific scents around pets.
Why does my candle look frosty or have little beads on the surface?+
That’s completely normal. “Frosting” (a white, crystalline film) and tiny fragrance beads are natural characteristics of plant-based waxes like our coconut apricot blend. They’re cosmetic only and don’t affect how the candle burns or smells; your candle is just as good as the day it was poured.
Where do you ship, and how long does it take?+
We ship from Moore, Oklahoma (73170) to anywhere in the United States, via USPS Ground Advantage. Every order is Handmade in small batches, so please allow 2–4 business days for pouring, curing, and careful packing before it ships — custom projects typically take 7–10 business days. Once your package leaves our studio, USPS's published service standard is 2–5 business days for delivery. You'll receive tracking information as soon as your package is on its way. Shipping is calculated at checkout and is not included in product prices.
What should I do if my order arrives damaged or melted?+
First, let the candle cool completely before judging anything — wax settles back down as it cools, and most heat-softened candles burn just fine afterward. If the jar is cracked, the wax is unusable, or anything else looks wrong, email us at support@405craft.com or call 405-213-9488 with a photo and we'll make it right.
